Eight Easy Ways to Green Your Business

Eight Easy Ways to Green Your BusinessGreening your business has short-term effects that will save you money, let employees breathe better, and maybe even help land you a few more customers. These tips, sites, and kits can help your business go green for 2012.

1. Set Carbon Footprint Goals
Starting off the new year with a vague eco-friendly resolution usually just leads to business as usual. Set goals for how much you can reasonably reduce your carbon footprint, and then get there by purposefully making changes in the products you buy and the energy you use. This business carbon footprint calculator can help establish your footprint. Going a step further, a business energy audit will lead to utility bill savings.
2. Make Fuel Economy a Priority
living wall
Whether you have one company car or a fleet of delivery vehicles, make fuel efficiency a priority. You don’t have to buy a hybrid or a diesel car; the Department of Energy displays the most fuel-efficient vehicles in the country in each category on its website. And consider hooking employees up with memberships to by-the-hour car-sharing services such as Zipcar, which offers hybrids.
3. Install a Living Wall
No, a living wall doesn’t pulsate with chthonic forces and demand to be fed with brains. It's loaded up with plants that help clean up your indoor air quality, and they don’t have to cost a fortune. Home or small office versions can be found here starting at $450.00. If you’d rather not have a wall of plants, look at buying a few more plants to spread around the office to help you and your employees breathe easier. NASA-backed research shows that greenery removes toxic chemicals, including those found within computers and printers, from the air. The most potent air-cleaning plants include the low-maintenance peace lily and English ivy.
4. Think About the Lifecycle Before Buying Tech

Before you make any purchases, particularly for high-volume items, look at the packaging and materials that go into the product. While everything you buy can’t be 100-percent organic or packaging-free, choose a product that's a bit more eco-friendly than its competition. The nonprofit EPEAT ratings mark laptops and desktops that conserve more energy and use fewer toxic materials than others. The quarterly Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics ranks the best practices of big tech brands. Consider undertaking a life cycle assessment for your own products or services to determine where you can make improvements.
5. Green Your Printing
If you print brochures or other marketing collateral, try to go as green as you can with your printing choices. Check out these five green printing tools. If you need a third-party to print materials, Greenerprinter.com makes a commitment to the environment.
Google+ Hangouts
Google+ Hangouts6. Offer Telecommuting and Videoconferencing
Many tools allow employees to work from anywhere, and employers enjoy bottom-line benefits to telecommuting policies. GoToMeeting, Skype, Google+ Hangouts, and many other technologies let you meet with employees on the fly even if they are working in their slippers at home. The savings alone for in-person meetings where employees need to fly to a destination is 1600 kilograms of carbon emissions, according to the World Wildlife Fund. That's not to mention savings for your travel budget.
7. Power Off Everything at Night
Belkin's $10 Conserve Socket is a dead-simple power timer.
Belkin's $10 Conserve Socket is a dead-simple power timer. If you want to turn all of your office equipment and lights off at the same time, you can do it with an INSTEON system. Put the on/off switch beside the office door to rest assured that lights, printers, and other items aren't silently sucking money out of your bottom line every night. Don’t put computers on this kind of system; follow the next tip instead. It's also worth investing in smarter power strips that reduce the standby power drained by gadgets that aren't in use. Belkin has a number of easy-to-use gizmos to help control the power demands of everday equipment.
8. Use Your Computer’s Power-Saving Mode
Every computer can be run in power-saving mode. In Windows 7, go into your control panel, and then choose Power Options and Power Saver, except where you really need your computer to run at peak performance. Your graphic designer, for example, may not want to run her computer on Power Saver mode. And if she's rocking an Apple, check out built-in power saving features for OS X.

DOWNLOAD ! YOUR UNINSTALLER PRO with KEYGEN !

Overview

You've probably encountered some stubborn programs that just won't uninstall at all or uninstall completely, right? And, more often than not, when you use the Windows Add/Remove Program utility, there are remnants or "artifacts" of the program left behind in the system registry and on your hard drive that are no longer needed. These useless items will bog your PC down and, over time, it will get slower and slower lugging around this useless baggage - unexpected errors and frequent crashes may also occur because of this!

What's the problem?

Let's say you frequently install trial versions of programs to check them out. And let's also say that, after giving them a shot, you don't like them and decide to uninstall them. Unfortunately, you find it impossible to uninstall some of them - they remain on the Windows installed programs list even they are "supposedly" gone. These improperly uninstalled programs can also be the cause of errors because many junk files and registry keys/values were left behind on your PC. These 'junk artifacts' can - and do - cause system problems and slow down Windows substantially.

Here's the solution!

Your Uninstaller! will solve these problems. It removes any installed program and clears all the left-behind traces - no more 'junk artifacts' remaining. Whenever you uninstall a program, Your Uninstaller! removes it completely! There's absolutely nothing left behind.
"PCs inevitably accrue a mass of unwanted and unused files that eat up system resources and reduce system stability. Uninstalling these items can be an arduous task, but Your Uninstaller Pro simplifies the process considerably..." - CNET Review

The most exciting part of Your Uninstaller! is: removing every part of a program completely. With Your Uninstaller!, it's easy to uninstall any installed program - no trace left.

If you often install/uninstall software, you will most inevitably experience corrupted programs. Let Your Uninstaller! fix them.
  • Full system scan after a program is uninstalled for complete removal.
Your Uninstaller! scans the whole system for related traces and completely removes any 'junk artifacts' after normal uninstallation. You'd never even know the program was once installed on your PC.
  • Force removal of a program.
Some programs are really hard to remove, especially old-fashioned non-conforming programs. Even they aren't a problem for Your Uninstaller!
  • Keep your system stable and clean with various system tools.
Your Uninstaller! has built-in system tools like Uninstaller, Startup Manager, Internet Traces Eraser, StartMenu Manager,  and Disk Cleaner to keep Windows clean and in proper operating order.
  • Easy to Use. No expert knowledge required.

RIP Technology: 10 Products and Services That Died in 2011

From the Flip to Google Health, these tech losers showed promise--just not enough to keep them alive.

Humans are list-making animals. At no time is that impulse more prevalent than December, when we set ourselves the task of churning out year-end retrospectives. In the tech universe, those lists generally call out the best products, the splashiest debuts, and the most promising technologies of the year (see, for instance, PCWorld’s own “100 Best Products of 2011"). But there are tech losers each year, too--products, concepts, and services that kick the proverbial bucket. Some, like the vileRustock botnet (taken down in March), we were glad to see go.
Other tech demises evoke genuine regret: good products lost in the ferocious market of 2011, tech initiatives that grew too expensive to retain their sponsor’s funding, even well-engineered gear that simply never caught on with the public. Herewith, my respects to 10 tech goners that we at PCWorld are truly going to miss.
RIP Technology: 10 Products and Services That Died in 2011The Flip: Starting in 2007, Pure Digital's ultraportable camcorder kicked off a revolution, putting video in the hands of everyday folks, and probably enabling the creation of more YouTube cat videos than any product in history. But a 2009 sale to networking heavyweight Cisco and the rise of video-capable smartphones combined to bury everyone's favorite pocket camcorder. Cisco pulled the plug in April.
RIP Technology: 10 Products and Services That Died in 2011Verizon’s unlimited data plan: If you're a Verizon customer, you've likely been keeping close tabs on your mobile downloading habits since July. That’s when the carrier scrapped its all-you-can-eat option for a smorgasbord of mobile data-usage plans. With overage charges costing $10 per gig, movie and music streaming can get very expensive. And as the year closes, various pundits are predicting that Sprint may soon discontinue its unlimited data plan. Come back, DVDs: All is forgiven.
RIP Technology: 10 Products and Services That Died in 2011HP WebOS: To borrow the words of The Princess Bride’s Miracle Max, HP’s mobile operating system “is only mostly dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead.” Indeed, there may be life after death for this promising multitasking OS, which was installed on commercial flops such as the Palm Pre and the HP TouchPad (see product number 99 in our Best Products of the Year list). For months, rumors circulated that HP would sell off the OS. Then earlier this month, HP announced that WebOS was going open source. Here’s hoping for a spirited revival.
RIP Technology: 10 Products and Services That Died in 2011Zune HD: Two reactions greeted news that Microsoft had finally pulled the plug on its portable media player: 1) gnashing of teeth from the (few) faithful, who deemed the Zune superior to the iPod; and 2) surprise from most music fans, who didn’t know it was still being produced at all. Then again, maybe the Zune isn’t completely gone, since its revolutionary “Metro” interface figures prominently in Windows Phone 7, the Xbox 360, and Windows 8.
RIP Technology: 10 Products and Services That Died in 2011AltaVista: This once-mighty search engine has effectively been dead for years. But its demise became official in May, when corporate parent Yahoo swapped in its own search engine and started returning results on a Yahoo page. Yet in the days before Google, AltaVista was the Web's most sophisticated search engine, providing unprecedented full-text searching capabilities to the sprawl that was the mid-'90s Web. For that I'll be forever grateful, and maybe even a little wistful.
RIP Technology: 10 Products and Services That Died in 2011Google Labs: The development playground that gave rise to services such as Google Maps and Google Groups is no more, due to "streamlining efforts" implemented in July. The good news is that app-specific projects, such as Gmail Labs and Google Maps Labs, are still alive and kicking.
RIP Technology: 10 Products and Services That Died in 2011Google Health: Google will shut down this ambitious service, designed to provide users a secure place to store their personal health information, just as the big ball drops in Times Square, officially making it the first tech demise of 2012. But I’m including it here because I’d rather not wait a year to deliver the eulogy. A promising concept,Google Health was a victim of our suspicious human nature: Apparently we’re not comfortable putting our health information in a third party’s hands. Imagine--we don’t trust Google. What a surprise.
RIP Technology: 10 Products and Services That Died in 2011Google Knol: Entry number three for Google in this year’s Tech Senescence Stakes, Knol had big plans--namely, to challenge Wikipedia. Intended to be a user-written encyclopedia, Knol coulda been a contender if it had launched in, say, 2001 instead of 2007. But with so many of the world’s content experts already doing their charity work for Wikipedia, Knol lacked enough fleshed-out articles to be taken seriously. Google’s blog post on the subject notes that as of May 1, 2012, “knols won’t be viewable.” Fortunately, Knol won’t be forgotten completely. Wikipedia has an article on it.
RIP Technology: 10 Products and Services That Died in 2011Dell Streak: Dell’s entry into the crowded tablet sweepstakes, theStreak never gained any traction against the dominant iPad. The poorly reviewed tablet (which came in 5- and 7-inch versions) somehow felt like a me-too product even though it was one of the first Android tablets out there. The $200 price tag should have been a draw (as it was for the Amazon Kindle Fire), but the two-year AT&T contract required for activation was a turnoff. Dell can do better than this; I say it’s time for a winning streak.
RIP Technology: 10 Products and Services That Died in 2011The white MacBook: From optical drives to FireWire ports, Apple has shown an uncanny ability to phase out technologies right before they become old hat. We’re not really all that broken up about losing thewhite MacBook laptop this year. But if its retirement spells imminent doom for the color white, we’re not going to be pleased.

DOWNLOAD! USB SAFELY REMOVE FULL WITH KEY!

USB Safely Remove is a USB device manager. It saves time and extends user abilities on active work with flash drives, portable drives, card readers and other gadgets.

A handy menu to stop devices

The main disadvantage of using the built-in Windows safe removal tool is that when using several hot-plug devices it is often quite difficult to recognize which device needs to be stopped. Most devices have the same name: "USB mass storage device". In addition, Windows does not let you hide a device you would not want to stop from the menu.

USB Safely Remove saves you from these problems and offers an original and multifunctional stopping menu, which displays actual device names with icons. Using this menu you can find and stop a device in a snap!

Hide device from the menu

Also, this menu allows you to:
  • Rename a device
  • Change a device image
  • Hide a device from the menu
  • Scan for hardware changes
  • Stop all devices at once

The device cannot be stopped right now. Why?

Ever encountered the situation when Windows does not allow you to remove a device? Unlike Windows, USB Safely Remove will show you the programs which prevent the device from being stopped and let you close these programs or just the files they opened on the device.
The device cannot be stopped

Keyboard shortcuts to safe removal

Like to do everything using the keyboard? Now you can stop and view devices with only ONE hotkey! No need to remember keyboard shortcuts for each device. Being in any application, press the key combination (Win+S by default) and you will see the stop menu. Use the Up\Down Arrow keys to select the device you need and either press Enter to stop it or Ctrl B to view the contents of a device disk. Also you can assign a dedicated hotkey to stop a certain device.

One stop hotkey

Program autorun on device connection\disconnection

Another USB Safely Remove feature that distinguishes it from similar software is starting any applications not only after connecting a device, but also before removing it. The autorun feature allows you to set up data backup before disconnecting a removable hard drive, to run Total Commander with the contents of the pen-drive, automatically unmount an encrypted TrueCrypt drive before disconnecting the USB media, etc.
Automatically running programs

Command line to safe removal

USB Safely Remove has a powerful and convenient command line: usr.exe. It allows you to automate work with devices. For example, you can automatically stop devices according to schedule or in case of any other event. In addition the command line tool of "USB Safely Remove" allows to "return device back".
Command line

Working with any hot-plug devices - USB, SATA, FireWire, PCMCIA

Another important difference between the program and the standard Safely Remove Hardware icon is the possibility to see and stop any kinds of hotplug devices. If USB Safely Remove does not display the device you need, try enabling the "Display all storage devices" checkbox in the program options.
USB, SATA, FireWire, PCMCIA logos

Stopping via "disabling"

Some kinds of external devices (e.g. SATA drives from Silicon Image), are true hot-plug devices. However, their drivers do not support the "safe removal" function. Such devices are not displayed in the native safe removal tool and can be stopped only via disabling in the Device Manager. It is a tiresome way, because it requires many actions to do, moreover you must enable the device manually after you connect it next time.

Not only does USB Safely Remove allow you to stop such devices, it also detects automatically what devices must be "safely removed" and which devices must be "disabled." Also, the program enables the "disabled" device automatically on its next connection, thus it makes working with the device absolutely the same as with a usual device.
No device manager

Ejecting memory cards rather than the card reader

If you had safely removed a card reader, you would need to physically reconnect it in order to make it work with cards again (or to use "Return device back" feature of the program). In the case of two or more memory cards connected to the card reader at the same time, they all become unavailable in the system after you stop the card reader. USB Safely Remove lets you eject memory cards one-by-one. Moreover, if the memory card was locked by any processes, the program would display these "locking" processes as well as it does on failure to stop a whole device.

Hiding drives of empty card reader slots

Do you have a card reader with several slots? If you said "yes", you would likely use only one memory card at a time, however your card reader creates up to four drives in your system. It may be annoying because you are required to spend more time finding the memory card drive among other "empty" card reader drives.

USB Safely Remove rids you of this problem - the program can hide "empty" card reader drives automatically!

Return Device Back!

After you had stopped the device, but still did not unplug it, sometimes it is quite useful to return it back into the system. For example if you remembered that you forgot to write a file to the external drive. In order to do it, you have to physically reconnect the device, however sometimes it's quite inconvenient to do, e.g. if the device is connected to the rear panel of the computer.
Return device back feature
USB Safely Remove is the first Windows program that allows you to return stopped device back!

Power off drives on stopping in Vista & Win 7

When you safely remove the device in Windows XP it powers the device off – in the case of a flash drive its led was switched off and in the case of a portable hard drive it was spun down. But Microsoft changed this behavior in Vista and it still exists in Win 7: after you stop the device on these OSes the hard drive continue spinning and flash drive continue lighting. All modern hard drives park theirs heads automatically when you unplug them so in theory this behavior shouldn’t lead to loss data or damaged drives. But in practice the hard drive usually sound strangely when you unplug them on run and this makes a hard drive owner being a bit nervous when he hears that :)
USB Safely Remove can change this behavior and make the system power down USB ports. In order to enable this feature just answer "Yes, please" when USB Safely Remove suggests you to enable it.
Power off drives in Vista & Win 7

Other optional features:
  • System tray icon hiding when there are no devices to be stopped
  • Displaying volume labels instead of device names
  • Let you manage drive letters
  • Ability to mount storage devices as a NTFS folder
  • Exploring device drives in an alternative file manager (e.g. Total Commander)
  • Let you prevent Windows from assigning specified drive letters to hot-plug devices
